Shouldering Carp on the flats.

I spent the evening stalking carp at Riverbend Ponds.  I witnessed shouldering carp and many mudders.  Thinking this would be a nice repeat of some of previous trips I tried an egg pattern, but nope not this time.  Eggs were not on the menue.  Tonight it was a Merkin style Crab fly.  The carp were picky and spoked real easy, but I still had a blast casting to and casting on top of carp all night long.  I can honestly say I have mastered the art of putting the fly right on top of them! Oh well its great practice for Michigan and Beaver Island this July.

  1. Good job Lonny!

I have Merkin Style flies I tied for carp, gave most to my boys but still have some. Hmmm, time to think about that for my next trip. Nice looking ponds! My boys and I were fishing together yesterday, rare event, nice fishing, but like I tell all you Coloradans, I don't find that clear water often.

    Bully for you! Gregg

  2. Thank you Gregg, yes we are lucky in Colorado with all the clear shallow water to fish. I hope to get out tonight after a meeting at work and try my luck again. Its an exciting time on the ponds right now. Hope you can get out more.

  3. Merkin style eh? Do you get a nice soft landing?

I swear that sometimes I will cast in the complete oppostite direction but the fly somehow sprout wings, take a right turn and somehow land right on the fish.

  4. Trevor, the landing is really soft, but like you sometimes I wonder if someone else is pushing my fly around at the last minute. I swear I was aiming left when the fly goes right. The carp are more spooky now and anything that makes a loud or wet presentation spooks them.

  5. Nice report Lonny! The carp on my local flats are extremely spooky too. Small, light flies will take them though. Sometimes.

    1. Ty, I hear you, the smaller the better it seems. Any splash makes them spook which is strage as they are jumping and making a total fools of themselves. Love it.

      Lonny.

  6. What time are you normally going out to the flats Lonny? I have ventured out to the prospect ponds flats the past couple weekends, and I havent seen a single carp out there.

  7. NoCoFly, I have not been out to Prospect ponds recently, but I do know Arapahoe and Riverbend are really warming up and the carp are on the eat. Maybe we could hook up and do some scouting together and compare notes soon.
